Review: Corkcicle Rifle Paper Co. Hydrangea Collection

As you peruse the local stores and websites for Mother’s Day gift ideas, perhaps you have also asked yourself, Can Mom have too many travel mugs? (Asking for a friend.)

Let’s be realistic. We live in the age of zero-waste consciousness, life on-the-go, and Covid obsession. Travel mugs, water bottles, and similar accoutrements have joined the ranks of accessories. An “accessory” is both functional and an expression of the beholder (I.e. this will hold my water, won’t spill, and I’m feeling perky/mellow/austere today).

On April 12, Corkcicle released its Hydrangea collection as part of an ongoing partnership with Rifle Paper Co. We focus on the 16 ounce travel mug, 16 ounce tumbler and 12 ounce stemless wine cups in this review. Clusters of hydrangea adorn the vessels in a serene but lively palette of sky blue, natural greens, and soft white.

There is something appealing about the the simplicity and fluidity of the design. It is classic and cute (in the most flattering sense of the word). There is whimsy and grace. The tones evoke the lightness of spring and the opening up of the world, both botanically and socially. According to the company, designs are applied by hand and finished in a high gloss, which has a nice feel on the grip.

The company prominently states in its insulation properties that contents stay cold for 9 hours and hot for 3 hours, so I put it through a test. My experiment was not precisely executed, but here are the results. (Keep in mind the lid was sealed shut during the experiment, and results obviously vary with duration and frequency of how open containers are.)

After putting boiling water in the 16 ounce coffee mug, 3 hours later it was still hot enough to scald my tongue. I put ice water in the 16 ounce tumbler, which I accidentally left overnight for a total of 14 hours. Although the ice had long since melted, the water was still ice cold. Corkcicle products are clearly well-made high-performance products.

They also happen to be very attractive. Hydrangea is just the latest in a long line of interesting collections it’s released through the years, and it would be distortive to leave you with the idea that the company only does florals. (My personal favorite is the Star Wars collection. Let’s not pigeon-hole mom into blooming pastels.)

Which leads back to the question: Can Mom have too many travel mugs? As a mom, I will say no, if the mug is good looking and durable. If I have to lug something around with me practically everywhere every single day, variety is most welcome.
