At least 169 people, including 12 policemen who had returned from West Bengal after election duty, have tested positive for novel coronavirus in Mizoram, pushing the state’s COVID-19 caseload to 7,551, an official said on Sunday. So far 287 police personnel out of 705, who had gone for poll duty in West Bengal and Assam, have tested positive for the infection, the official said. Of the 169 fresh COVID-19 cases, 105 were reported from Aizawl district, Lunglei (11), 12 cases each from Siaha and Kolasib districts, Saitual (10), Serchhip (7), Khawzawl (8) and Mamit (4). At least 2,667 samples were tested in the last 24 hours registering an infection rate of 6.37 per cent, the official said. (PTI)
A 103-year-old man from Palghar in Maharashtra has recovered from COVID-19 despite being in the vulnerable age group, officials said on Sunday. Shamrao Ingle, a native of Virendra Nagar area, was admitted to a rural COVID-19 hospital in Palghar after he contracted the infection. He was discharged on Saturday after recovering from the disease, a spokesperson of the district collectorate said in a release. According to doctors at the hospital, the elderly man responded well to the medical treatment provided to him and co-operated with the staff at the facility. He walked out of the hospital with a smile on Saturday. (PTI)
With the addition of1,966 new cases of coronavirus, the infection count in Thane district of Maharashtra has reached 4,86,737, an official said on Sunday. Besides these new cases reported on Saturday, the virus also claimed the lives of 68 more people, taking the death toll in the district to 8,003, he said. The COVID-19 mortality rate in Thane stood at 1.64 per cent, he added. Details of recovered and under-treatment patients were not provided by the district administration. (PTI)
Arunachal Pradesh reported 244 new COVID-19 cases, the highest single-day spike, pushing the coronavirus tally in the state to 20,046, a health department official said here on Sunday. The Capital Complex region recorded the maximum number of fresh cases at 77, followed by Tawang (33), 20 each in Lower Dibang Valley and Lohit, Changlang (19), Lower Siang (13), East Siang (12) and Lower Subansiri (10), State Surveillance Officer Dr Lobsang Jampa said. Nine cases were also reported from Namsai, seven from East Kameng, Papumpare (6), four each from West Kameng, Upper Subansiri and Upper Siang and one each from Leparada, West Siang, Shi-Yomi, Dibang Valley, Anjaw and Tirap district, respectively, the official said. Meghalaya reported 11 new COVID-19 fatalities, the highest single-day deaths, pushing the toll in the state to 210, a senior health department official said on Sunday. Of the 11 deaths reported on Saturday, seven were from East Khasi Hills district, three from West Jaintia Hills and one from Ri-Bhoi district, the official said. The COVID-19 caseload in the state rose to 19,302 as 375 more people tested positive for the infection on Saturday, Health Services Director, Aman War said. (PTI)

India recorded 4,03,738 fresh COVID-19 cases in a day, which pushed the tally to 2,22,96,414, according to the Union health ministry data updated on Sunday. The death toll climbed to 2,42,362 with 4,092 daily deaths, the data updated at 8 am showed. Registering a steady increase, the active cases have increased to 37,36,648, comprising 16.76 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 82.15 per cent. The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 1,83,17,404 with 3,86,444 patients recovering in a day, while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.09 per cent, the data stated. India’s COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16. It went past 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and surpassed the one-crore mark on December 19. India crossed the grim milestone of 2 crore on May 4. (PTI)
