Rian Johnson has already dabbled in the world of Star Wars to mixed results, at least according to most fans, with The Last Jedi but the director has reportedly expressed interest in directing an episode of the Disney+ series, The Mandalorian. How will Star Wars fans react? Well, let’s find out!
The news of Johnson’s interest in The Mandalorian comes courtesy of “USA Today” bestselling author and Star Wars fan Sariah Wilson. Beyond this reveal, Wilson also drops the news that Johnson visited the set of The Mandalorian during season one and absolutely loved what he saw. You can check out Wilson’s Twitter posts below that detail Johnson’s desire to helm an episode of the Disney+ series:
finding time to break away and do it. He said he has spoken to Dave Filoni about it. He had gone and visited the set during Season 1. He said it was so cool and I told him I was very jealous. He had seen “Baby Yoda” months before the reveal.
He said it was fascinating seeing

the way that they’re shooting the show. He asked if I’d seen BTS stuff (of course I have).
He said when he was standing there in that space and they did the thing where they moved the camera and the perspective on the screen shifted he said he almost fell over. You get vertigo.

The fact that Johnson wants to take on the world of Star Wars again should be seen as an act of bravery on his part. While critics fully embraced STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI with a 90% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the fan response was much more polarizing. The film currently sits with a dismal 40% audience score on the site and many fans held Johnson responsible for essentially destroying what Star Wars really was. I’m not a huge fan of the film but it has very little to do with the decisions Johnson made. I applaud him for attempting to do something different with the material but my issues were more with pacing and not connecting with the characters rather than the big sweeping choices he made with the narrative.
As of now, it looks like Johnson is too busy to take this one because of his commitment to Knives Out 2, which recently sold to Netflix, along with a third film, for a staggering amount that will make Johnson very rich. Johnson also previously revealed to Wilson that his planned Star Wars trilogy was still happening but no dates or timelines had been revealed. At the moment, Johnson is very busy with other projects but The Mandalorian is on his radar and I wouldn’t be surprised if directing an episode was down the road for him.
Would YOU want Johnson to direct an episode of The Mandalorian?
