The most recent providing from Texas-based Milam & Greene has arrived, the second expression of its Distillery Version. (We missed the primary launch.) Not like a few of M&G’s releases, that are blends of sourced and in-house-distilled spirit, the Distillery Version is a “grain to glass” whiskey, constituted of the usual M&G “candy” mash of 70% corn, 22% rye, and eight% barley. Aged for 3 to three 1/2 years, bottled at cask power.

This can be a typical Texas monster, powerfully woody with a great deal of recent corn on the nostril. The aroma is nicely spiced with cinnamon and a brown sugar kick — nevertheless it’s by no means actually candy. The palate doubles down on the corn notes, recent and salty Corn Nuts dusted with black pepper, cumin, and baking spice — all parts that come to think about it will be nice in a pleasant bowl of Texas chili. The large barrel char observe hits heavy because the end builds, a transparent nod to the whiskey’s youth, the cinnamon segueing into clove territory. Extra of that sultry cumin on the end, plus a touch of well-toasted marshmallow so as to add some wanted sweetness.

At full power, that is robust and aggressive, however there’s loads of exuberance and a minimum of a fleeting sense of steadiness to maintain issues attention-grabbing — and for multiple pour. One can’t assist however assume that this collection can be extra impactful because it will get extra age below its toes, however for now it’s value a shot or two. That apart, in the intervening time M&G’s multi-distillate blends like its killer Triple Cask Bourbon stay the clear go-to choices for the model.

Obtainable for a restricted time, specifically on the distillery.

115 proof.
