Much to their credit, the folks at Mighty Swell keep the new additions to the flavor profile ever-changing. This scrappy little Austin upstart continues to carve out their own little space in the ready-to-drink cocktail world. They are back once again with four new flavors for consideration. Each 12-ounce can checks in at 5% abv and 100 calories each.
Mighty Swell Mango Raspberry Spiked Seltzer – The mango is absent on the nose, which is full of sweet raspberry, though it tempers any potential candy sweetness the raspberry could have blasted forth on the palate. It’s well-balanced and easily approachable, and a credit to getting the balance right. The best of the bunch, and a leading contender for the best of the Mighty Swell portfolio to this point. A-
Mighty Swell Pineapple Spiked Seltzer – A little bit heavy with pineapple sweetness on the palate, which threatens to careen overboard into syrupy waters but thankfully never really does. There was an expectation this would evoke memories of pineapple juice from small metal cans, but it stays pleasantly crisp and refreshing from start to finish. B+
Mighty Swell Grapefruit Spiked Seltzer (2021) – When Christopher reviewed this back in 2019, he reported a pink-hue coloration, a heavy saccharine note on the palate, and a raw, industrial finish. All of these characteristics have been eliminated or muted thanks to recipe recalibration. However, the Squirt-like nose remains the same. Kudos should certainly be allowed for the welcome improvements. B+
Mighty Swell Blood Orange Spiked Seltzer – Blood orange is a very difficult flavor to correctly execute, no matter the means of consumption. Unfortunately this is not the exception to the rule. While the nose hints at promise, the palate rests squarely on what could be best described as flat orange soda. There’s always room for improvement, and this one needs some tweaking and TLC during the next iteration. C
