Coperies is a brand new model from Cognac-maker Merlet, which says it leverages centuries of knowhow at creating brandy to create this pot-distilled single malt whisky. Made with French barley within the Charentes area and aged in French oak barrels, this whisky is as French as you may get. There’s no growing old info, however let’s not maintain that towards them.

The Cognac connection is instantly obvious from nosing the freshly-poured spirit: Fruity and floral, one may very well be forgiven on first blush for assuming this was certainly brandy, as even the gentle earthiness feels at house in a youthful Cognac. There’s a grainy character beneath that positively locations this in whiskeydom, in fact, a toasty oak aspect including to the normal profile. The palate is nice — once more, fairly brandylike — with notes of rum raisin, lavender, and brown sugar all in a swirl. Granary notes are well-integrated, giving the whisky a breakfast cereal high quality that’s typical of many a single malt from different nations. The end retains a toe down on that brown sugar high quality, permitting the whisky to complete on the candy facet. Once more, the extra I sip it, the extra I feel I’m consuming Cognac — and that’s no slam.

80 proof.
