Review: Ben & Jerry’s Whiskey Biz Ice Cream

What happens when you get Vermont neighbors Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream and WhistlePig Whiskey in the same room together? It’s not that hard of a question, really: You get whiskey-flavored ice cream.

Ben & Jerry’s latest flavor is a wild one indeed, so hang on: Brown butter bourbon ice cream with blonde brownies and WhistlePig-infused caramel swirls, deep breath, topped with white chocolatey ganache and white fudge chunks. Hope you saved room for dessert to go with your dram.

Ben & Jerry’s sent us a couple of pints to try. There’s real whiskey in here, after all. But how whiskey-like is it? Let’s find out.

First, you need to get through the least interesting part of the product: The ganache and fudge on the top. This ultra-firm, very sugary, but otherwise somewhat lifeless topping doesn’t serve a lot of purpose, and to me it detracts from the main event: The swirly ice cream underneath. The cream itself is alone clearly whiskeylike, that brown butter character pairing well with a vanilla-heavy, bourbon-like kick. The chewy blondies serve mainly to mix things up texturally, but best of all is the caramel swirl. I doubt anyone would be able to identify WhistlePig rye in this gooey delight, but it definitely has a whiskey kick to it,.

It’s a delicious product that’s hard to put down, at least until you spin the carton around and take in the four-digit calorie count on the backside: 1240 per pint. Yowza.
