Break out the grog and start sharpening the swords because Millenium has found their Red Sonja in Hannah John-Kamen!
Okay. I’m going to try and keep my shit together long enough so we can get through the details of this news. Hannah John-Kamen, who starred as a villain in Ant-Man and the Wasp and will soon play Jill Valentine in Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, is set to beat some ass as the title character for Joey Soloway’s Red Sonja. This project has been in the works for what feels like forever, and now it’s finally coming together with one hell of an inspired casting announcement for the scarlet-haired killer of men and monsters.
In addition to helming the film, Soloway will also co-write the screenplay with Tasha Huo, a contributing writer on Netflix’s upcoming Tomb Raider TV series.
“Hannah is a very talented actress who we’ve been following for years and she is Red Sonja,” Soloway said in a statement. “Her range, sensibilities, and strength are all qualities we have been looking for and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on this journey together.”
As a legend of the 1970s printed page, Red Sonja made her name as a compliment to Conan the Barbarian. Known to many as a “She-Devil with a Sword,” Red Sonja is a conqueror of men, commander of respect, and positively lethal with a sword. Dynamite Comics still publishes Red Sonja comics to this very day, with creators the likes of Gail Simone, Jordie Bellaire, Jimmy Palmiotti, and Amanda Conner at the helm of some of her latest conquests. Moreover, Soloway’s Red Sonja will mark the second time that the scarlet-haired hell-bringer is getting the silver screen treatment after Brigitte Nielsen played the character opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Conan in 1985. The character was created by Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith for Marvel Comics.

This is by far and away one of John-Kamen’s biggest roles to date, and I personally could not be more excited. I think she’s a perfect fit for the part of Red Sonja, and I can’t wait to see her carve her way through hordes of beasts and drink other warriors under the table.
