Skin bleaching is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures for women of color, and has come a long way in the last few years. Now, the preferred method of bleaching for women is an intravenous (IV) drip of glutathione, a powerhouse antioxidant naturally found in our bodies. Glutathione lightens the skin by deactivating the enzyme tyrosinase, which helps produce melanin.
Thousands of clinics have popped up in recent years advertising a glutathione IV drip as a “natural” way to “detoxify” the body. And darker skinned women, especially Black or Asian, have been lining up in droves to take advantage of glutathione’s lightening side effect.
