It might soon be time to collect your swankiest pair of well-worn ladies’ footwear and give it a good celebratory sniff because Mindhunter Season 3 is reportedly back on at Netflix.
According to a new report published by Small Screen, sources close to the streamer say that David Fincher is once again eyeing a third season of the serial killer series.
“All I can really tell you about Mindhunter is that conversations between Netflix and Fincher are ongoing. They are discussing the possibility of bringing the show back for a third season,” claims Small Screens unnamed source. “It’s still very early days, but Fincher sounds more upbeat about the project.”
While this is not a confirmation that a third season is definitely happening, some hope is better than none, yeah? Like many fans of Mindhunter, I would be down for a Season 3 presentation right here and now. Granted, some people were less than enthusiastic about the ending of the second season. However, I would remind them that not all cases have a happy ending, and sometimes, those responsible for unspeakable acts of cruelty go free. That, unfortunately, is the way of things.
Back in January 2020, the show’s leads, Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, and Anna Torv, saw their contracts expire. It was at that time when Netflix placed the show on an “indefinite hold.” Shortly thereafter while speaking with Vulture, Fincher confessed that Mindhunter took a lot out of him, creatively speaking. “We lived there for almost three years. Not year in and year out, but … probably six or seven months a year … Mindhunter was a lot for me,” Fincher told the outlet at the time. In fact, it was Season 2 that really drove the nail into the coffin for Fincher. It’s been said that he did close to all the heavy lifting himself and that the weight of it was excruciating. According to Fincher, he “ended up looking at what was written and deciding I didn’t like any of it, so we tossed it and started over.” To see the project through, he promoted Courtenay Miles, who had been an assistant director on the show, to be the co-showrunner.
“It’s a 90-hour workweek,” Fincher said about the Mindhunter workload. “It absorbs everything in your life. When I got done, I was pretty exhausted, and I said, ‘I don’t know if I have it in me right now to break season three.”

Apparently, Mindhunter costs a pretty penny to produce, and given its viewership numbers, it was a tough decision on Netflix to cough up the cash.
“Listen, for the viewership that it had, it was a very expensive show,” Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos and Cindy Holland, the company’s VP for original content at the time, said when Season 3 was up for debate. “We talked about, ‘Finish Mank and then see how you feel,’ but I honestly don’t think we’re going to be able to do it for less than I did season two. And on some level, you have to be realistic — dollars have to equal eyeballs.”
Listen up, Netflix. I think we can all agree that Mindhunter Season 3 needs to happen. I suspect that your pockets are pretty deep these days, and it would be a real shame to let a gem of a series like this go after only two spectacular seasons. I know it might take a while to get the ball rolling, but let’s break out the whiteboard and map out a plan, shall we? After all, the world needs more nice things. Some of those things feature show-sniffing serial killers, sure, but hey, whatever gets your goat, right?
