The 2005 remake of HOUSE OF WAX from Dark Castle is getting the Scream Factory collector’s edition treatment. It has been announced that the company will release a brand new edition of the film on July 13, 2021.
Special features are still in the works and will be announced at a later date but Scream Factory confirms that a new high definition transfer of the film will be included. Also confirmed is a new interview with Paris Hilton who played Paige in the film and had a pretty memorable stalk and chase sequence that ended the socialite getting a pole through the head. House of Wax may have played on slasher movie cliches but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t fun and it’s certainly worthy of this special edition treatment in my eyes. House of Wax is a very loose remake of the 1953 film of the same name which was also a remake of the 1933 film Mystery of the Wax Museum. In the film, a group of teens are unwittingly stranded near a strange wax museum and soon must fight to survive and keep from becoming the next exhibit. In addition to Hilton, the film also stars Elisha Cuthbert, Jared Padalecki, Jon Abrahams, Robert Ri’chard, Chad Michael Murray, and Brain Van Holt. The film wasn’t embraced by critics, registering a 26% rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes but it did generate decent box office. On a $40 million budget, the film earned $68.7 million worldwide with $32 million of that coming from the domestic front. In the year since its release, the film has gained a bit of a cult following and even earned $42 million in VHS/DVD rentals.
I actually really enjoy House of Wax and definitely have this collector’s edition on my pre-order list. It’s a fun slasher film that arrived a bit too late to the game for slasher films and remakes in the mid-2000s but it’s not a bad way to pass the time. Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, who went on to direct Orphan, The Shallows, Jungle Cruise, and a string of Liam Neeson movies such as Unknown, Non-Stop, Run All Night, and The Commuter, the Scream Factory Collector’s Edition of House of Wax will be available on July 13, 2021, and can be pre-ordered here!
