The original principal cast of DOWNTON ABBEY are all set to return for the upcoming sequel. Focus Features has started production on Downton Abbey 2 and the film should arrive just in time for Christmas on December 22, 2021.

The original cast consists of Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Imelda Staunton, and Maggie Smith. Also joining them are Hugh Dancy, Laura Haddock, Nathalie Baye, and Dominic West. Taking care of scripting duties is Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes and Emmy winners Gareth Neame and Liz Trubridge will produce the film along with Fellowes. Directing the sequel will be BAFTA and Emmy-nominate director Simon Curtis.

Downton Abbey was a huge show during its run and it proved to be a big hit with moviegoers. The first film took in over $230 million worldwide and it proved that the TV juggernaut could also have a life on the big screen. The original film followed a Royal Visit to the Crawley family and Downton staff from the King and Queen of England and it ended with a ball fitting for the Royal Family. Producer Gareth Neame had this to say about getting started on the sequel:

“After a very challenging year with so many of us separated from family and friends, it is a huge comfort to think that better times are ahead and that next Christmas we will be re-united with the much beloved characters of Downton Abbey.”

I will say I didn’t understand the true power of Downton Abbey until the film came out. I guess I shouldn’t have been completely surprised by its box office success but I thought the show had a very niche audience and that the film wouldn’t necessarily make a killing during its theatrical run. Not only did Downton Abbey prove to be successful but it also demonstrated that the older demographic will rush out for a movie if it appeals to their taste.
