Honestly, I don’t think there are 101 gins you need to try before you die. I would be surprised if there were 20.
Ian Buxton makes a case for the former, however, in his slim, straightforward book — which was recently revised and updated, and it’s easy to get sucked in. The usual suspects are here — Beefeater, Tanqueray (Ten, not the standard expression), Gordon’s, and Hendrick’s — but so are some thoughtful, unusual choices — Elephant, Rock Rose, and Ungava, for example.
But the book is best of all is when Buxton writes about gins I’ve never heard of. Sharish Blue Magic? Jawbox? Diplome? Shed 1 Cuckold’s Revenge? Some of these sound quite interesting, for sure.
Buxton writes with breezy authority — though often with more breeze than authority — about each of the 101 gins, with each pick filling a two-page spread. Picture and specs on the left, page-long writeup on the right. It’s just enough text to read while you’re sipping a martini made with the gin you just bought because Buxton recommended it, and the pint-sized book fits well on the bartop for guests to peruse while you’re doing their bidding.
