Time Cut: Freaky team reunites for Scream meets Back to the Future film

Scream, Freaky, Back to the Future, Christopher Landon, Michael Kennedy

The creative team behind the horror-comedy FREAKY is reuniting for a project that sounds completely inspired and intriguing. If Freaky was a dash of horror mixed with the body-swapping hilarity of Freaky Friday, their latest project, titled Time Cut, is being described as Scream meets Back to the Future.”

General plot details are unknown but Freaky director Christopher Landon, who is also responsible for the very fun duo of Happy Death Day and Happy Death Day 2U, is on board to produce the project, with writer Michael Kennedy signed on to handle screenwriting duties alongside Sono Patel. Madison Bailey will lead the cast alongside Antonia Gentry and Hannah MacPherson has been tapped to direct.

Production on the film is slated to begin in June in Canada and the Scream meets Back to the Future elevator pitch gives me the impression that the plot will merge science fiction with slasher movie tropes. Happy Death Day and Happy Death Day 2U explored the science/slasher genre before so Landon and his team certainly aren’t strangers to merging genres. They’ve hit every movie I’ve seen of theirs out of the park so I’m very interested to see where this film goes.

Landon and Kennedy’s last film Freaky proved to be a hit with critics and audiences, even though it was released when movie theaters were mostly shuttered due to the pandemic. Freaky carries a very good for horror 83% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed $15.9 million worldwide. While that figure may not seem impressive, the film only cost $6 million to make and it had to deal with a global pandemic. The movie still able to pull in a profit for Blumhouse Productions and it also performed well on PVOD. In the film, after swapping bodies with a deranged serial killer, a young girl in high school discovers she has less than 24 hours before the change becomes permanent. Freaky stars Vince Vaughn, Kathryn Newton, Celeste O’Connor, Misha Osherovich, Emily Holder, Mitchell Hoog, and Katie Finneran.
