Final summer season, we took our first take a look at a single malt from Torabhaig Distillery, the primary new distillery on the Isle of Skye in virtually two centuries. That preliminary dram, Legacy 1, confirmed appreciable promise, particularly given its relative youth at simply 4 years of age. In line with the distillery, there can be three further expressions beneath the Legacy Sequence label, all of that are supposed to showcase the evolution of their distinctive signature model, one thing they describe as “Nicely-Tempered Peat.” The second providing within the Legacy Sequence, dubbed Allt Gleann, was bottled in July of 2021 from small batches of not more than 30 casks (the inaugural launch was a bit much less discerning at 100 casks). Whereas there’s no particular info as to the age of this sequel, it’s reportedly drawn from casks laid down in 2017 and 2018, suggesting a barely younger composition than Legacy 1. Let’s test it out.

The aroma is once more noticeably peat-driven however with much less iodine and extra ashy smoke, candy and mildly barbecued. The fruit stays lurking beneath all of it with the bananas having ripened considerably and added to a beautiful pudding, full with Nilla Wafers. On the palate, that preliminary smoke remains to be well-restrained with refined matchheads, kelp, and kippers that turns candy and fruity fairly shortly. These parts nonetheless don’t come throughout as “legendary,” because the preliminary literature marketed, however there’s one thing impressively daring about them in such a youthful single malt. Notes of buttery banana tart, apple pie filling, and white peaches give a decadent dessert high quality, if solely briefly, to the mid-palate earlier than the smoke arrives once more on the end and rolls considerably abruptly over all of it. Nonetheless spectacular and displaying large promise.

92 proof.
