Review: King of Kentucky Straight Bourbon 14 Years Old (2021)

Brown-Forman’s King of Kentucky brand is again with its fourth launch. and just like the 2020 and 2018 releases, it’s a 14 12 months previous single barrel bottling made out of a 79% corn, 11% rye, and 10% barley mash. Proof varies among the many 33 barrels and 2700 bottles, from roughly 125 to 135. All of that is indicated on the label.

As all the time, KoK is a (very) massive bourbon that requires some cautious consideration to dilution to completely get pleasure from. At full power, the nostril is bursting with character, some barrel char giving option to an intense fruitiness, providing notes of dates, dried figs, orange peel — and a little bit of burnt finish barbecue. Properly-spiced with all the pieces within the baking cupboard — heavy on the cloves this 12 months — this mixture works properly with its fruity components.

Wealthy on the palate with notes of darkish chocolate and Pedro Ximenez sherry, the whiskey has each a spicy and barely winey character to it, a mild nuttiness informing the end. This sherried component (although the whiskey will not be aged in sherry barrels, thoughts you) is extra evident with a bit time in glass and a splash of water, although I believe this 2021 bottling can get by with much less dilution than prior years’ did. An eyedropper is much more applicable right here than beforehand; an excessive amount of water and the distinctiveness of the bourbon will get misplaced.

One other standout from the King of Kentucky.
