Along with a pandemic and general global turmoil, the last few years have also brought us the sparkling, ready-to-drink craze that seems to be in full bloom with no foreseeable end in sight. Never one to miss an opportunity, the powers that be at Cuervo have jumped in, and the results are pleasantly surprising.

The primary ingredients are straightforward and simple: Seltzer water and Cuervo tequila mixed with flavoring. Zero carbs, zero sugar, gluten-free. As minimalist as it gets. There are four flavors from which to choose: Mango, Black Cherry, Lime, and Grapefruit. We received three of the four for review consideration.

Each serving is about 90 calories with an abv of 4.5%.

Jose Cuervo Playamar Mango – The tequila is never overbearing, and the mango could have driven off the cliff in syrupy excess, but it remains tempered enough for balance from nose to finish. Dangerously drinkable, it could be consumed all day long with zero complaint. This is about as good as a sparkling ready-to-drink tequila cocktail can get. A- [BUY IT NOW FROM DRIZLY]

Jose Cuervo Playamar Grapefruit – There’s a hibiscus note here that is wonderfully understated and inviting, and the tartness of the grapefruit acts as a helpful complement to mask the presence of tequila. Like its mango sibling, it’s quite refreshing without being overwhelming. B+ [BUY IT NOW FROM DRIZLY]

Jose Cuervo Playamar Lime – The tequila cuts through here with greater clarity than the other two, possibly because this is also the offering most evocative of a sparkling margarita. The lime is tart in a manner reminiscent of chewy Spree candies from childhood, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing to have in a drink. It sure beats tasting sparkling tartar sauce.
