Review: Blood Oath Bourbon Whiskey Pact 7 2021

The at all times intriguing Blood Oath sequence continues with this, its seventh annual launch: Blood Oath Pact 7 Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. As has been the case in earlier years, it’s a mix of Kentucky bourbons, all rye-heavy recipes, together with a 14-year outdated bourbon, an 8-year outdated bourbon, and (the twist for 2021) an 8-year outdated bourbon completed in Sauternes casks. Sauternes and bourbon is an uncommon, and virtually distinctive, mixture, so kudos to Blood Oath for having the heart to offer it a strive.

Surprisingly restrained on the nostril, the whiskey exhibits aromas of peanut brittle, crimson pepper, and toasted coconut — by no means evoking Sauternes and, oddly, by no means actually evoking bourbon, both. There’s extra occurring on the palate, barely peppery with notes of cinnamon and cloves, echoing its heavy peanut character earlier than pumping out some notes of spice-laden nougat.

What I by no means get at any level is any sense of the Sauternes barrel — although which may be the sheer energy of the underlying bourbon pushing the impression of the ending barrel apart. Sauternes can do dazzling issues with extra elegant single malts. Right here it appears to be a no-show.

98.6 proof. 51,000 bottles produced.
