The Prisoner Wine Co. has vastly expanded its choices past its namesake wines lately, together with Saldo, which has essentially the most minimalist label round — in a great way. Complicating issues — there are two Saldos. One is a zinfandel (purple label), after which there’s this purple mix (blue label), a mixture of Petite Sirah, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Zinfandel.
Huge and brooding, you might be forgiven for assuming this was a zin-heavy mix, with the aggressive notes of milk chocolate and blueberries giving the wine a frightening degree of sweetness, fading into notes of cloves, however barely. The end is all sweetness, gooey molasses and an amazing chocolate syrup character that adheres to the tongue for ages. I cared little for the wine on first blush and loved it even much less as time wore on. Skip it.
