Confirmed during the Driving Tomorrow global digital conference broadcast, Lotus announced the name of its eagerly anticipated all-new sports car will be EMIRA. Previously only known by its codename, the Lotus Type 131, Emira means ‘commander’ or ‘leader’ and will be revealed to the world in July 2021. Inspired by the Evija all-electric hypercar, the all-new Lotus design has been teased on social media in recent days.

Lotus confirmed that the name had been ‘hidden in plain sight in the company’s recent media teaser films, as part of a pattern of dots and dashes designed into the central line on a road. Those who have a knowledge of Morse Code could have spotted that it spelled Emira, but the company decided to wait until April 27, the anniversary of the birthday of Samuel Morse, inventor of Morse Code, to announce this.

The Emira will be unveiled on Tuesday, July 6, 2021, at Hethel, and will make its public dynamic debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on July 8-11, 2021.

“It’s the most accomplished Lotus for generations – the perfectly packaged, powered, and formed sports car. Beautifully proportioned, shrink-wrapped, but with comfort, technology, and ergonomics built-in. With a design inspired by the Evija all-electric hypercar, it’s a game-changing Lotus sports car,” said Matt Windle, Managing Director, Lotus Cars

The 2022 Lotus Emira will be the latest model from the legendary British automaker and will be powered by a choice of internal combustion engines (ICE) – to note as well, this is the last time Lotus will launch an ICE car. IT will also have a feature an exciting new powertrain partnership that will make use of cutting-edge technology to give a highly efficient and distinctive Lotus experience. Lastly, bridging Lotus’s past with its future, EMIRA uses the architecture inherited from the Evora GT with the carbon-fiber Evija, presenting an exotic exterior. More details on the Lotus Emira will follow in July when the car is revealed
