While there is a debate over the official data provided by the Union Health Ministry with many alleging India of massive underreporting, the WHO says that even the official data shows how grim the situation is. The World Health Organization says that every fourth person dying due to Covid is from India.

With an average caseload of more than 3.5 lakh cases for more than 10 days in running, India accounts for nearly 50% of the global caseload. On numerous occasions, the health ministry has reiterated that there is no shortage of the vaccine. However, the daily inoculation data shows that there has been a massive decline in jabs administered per day since April 1st last month.

During the daily briefing, the top health ministry official said that the dip in cases show that the coronavirus curve is plateauing in some states. While Mumbai’s promising improvement may be the glimmer of hope but the nearly thousand deaths in Maharashtra in the last 24 hours show that the virus is killing more people this time. The situation is worsening in states such as West Bengal, Karnataka and Kerala. Bengaluru and Tamil Nadu capital Chennai are areas of concern, the Centre says. On the reason behind the devastating second wave, the Centre says that as the majority of the population dropping caution, along with less immunity due to 1st wave worsened the impact of the second wave.

As the Centre finally talking about the national lockdown and the link between double mutant and present surge, here are the latest updates from India and around the globe:

India recorded 4,12,262 new corona infections in the last 24 hours. This is the second when the daily caseload has breached the 4 lakh-mark. On May 1st, India saw 4,01,993 fresh viral infections. The Thursday health bulletin says that 3,980 people died of coronavirus complications in last 24 hours.

Ajit Singh, the feisty farmer leader, died of Covid infection today morning. He was 82. RLD chief’s son Jayant Chaudhary took to Twitter to confirm the news. In his post, Jayant said that his father, who was fondly known as ‘Chaudhary Sahib’, was found corona positive on April 20. However, he lost his battle to the viral infection in the early morning hours today. In an emotional appeal, Jayant said that those who want to pay respect to their leader should stay home and observe Covid protocols. He said that this would be the best way to honour the leader.

In a first, the Narendra Modi govt has finally linked the present Covid surge in the country with the Indian variant of coronavirus, an Indian Express report says. However, the report also adds that the Centre has somewhat kept it an open-ended discussion. The govt says that while there is a link between B.1.617 double mutant of coronavirus and present viral infections, it can’t be said in definite terms and need to be probed from clinical point of view. The prevalence of double mutant in the surge states shows an unmissable pattern. States such as Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Gujarat, West Bengal have shown the significant pattern of the coronavirus mutant and the spike.
