Youngberg Hill winery can be found near McMinnville in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, where it’s also home to what appears to be a beautiful boutique inn as well. Today we look at three current release bottlings from the winery, which is naturally focused on pinot noir.
2020 Youngberg Hill Aspen Pinot Gris Willamette Valley – Fresh, fruity, and floral, this textbook pinot gris has powerful notes of apricot, peach, and lemon notes, balanced with honeysuckle and jasmine on the back end, giving the wine a floral kick. Hints of lime emerge on the finish, though those apricot notes never far from the fray. This is a delight on its own, but it deserves an appropriate meal of seafood or a light pasta dish to pair it with to really show all of its charms. A- / $30
2019 Youngberg Hill Aspen Chardonnay Willamette Valley – A bit on the sour side, this wine (fermented and aged in once-used barrels) offers strong notes of gooseberry and some coconut, with green apple following behind. There’s some astringency here, as the wine feels a touch unripe. I liked it best served quite cold. B / $40
2018 Youngberg Hill Cuvee Pinot Noir Willamette Valley – A surprisingly sweet expression of pinot noir, this maraschino cherry-fueled wine pours on the fruit, with notes of vanilla and a hint of cotton candy and a chocolate-covered blueberry character as it meanders toward the finish. There’s just a hint of tannin to temper what is otherwise a fairly straightforward wine, though notes of cola and cloves on the conclusion add some spice to the proceedings. B / $35
